Ditubuhkan pada tahun 1947, kewujudan KGMS adalah untuk membantu meningkatkan lagi taraf dan kedudukan para guru Melayu Singapura. Natijahnya, KGMS merupakan sebuah kesatuan sekerja Melayu Islam yang berfungsi sebagai sebuah persatuan. Dwifungsi ini telah memberi KGMS satu identiti yang unik.
